International tender for 1,000 megawatt wind power

Global Arab Network - Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr. Hassan Younis said that the Egyptian power and energy sector will announce an international tender in May for the first phase of a two-stage project for establishing 1,000 megawatt-capacity wind power generation stations in the Gulf of Suez region.

The project will be operated under the BOO system (Build, Own, Operate) with each phase expected to produce 500 megawatts, Younis said.

The winning bidder will design, build, own and operate the station for 20 to 25 years, he added.

The Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) will purchase the generated power and sell it to consumers at prices to be determined by the Cabinet, he noted. The project was divided into two stages to encourage the largest number of investors to join the tender, he said.

The project comes after the success of a tender for establishing the first wind farm in Egypt under the BOO system.

The 250 megawatt wind farm will be finalized by 2014. The projects are part of broader efforts by the ministry to increase quantities of energy generated by renewable sources. (SIS)
