Global Arab Network  -  Madrid - Morocco is a "priority country" for Spain at the economic level, Spain's Industry, Tourism and Trade Minister, Miguel Sebastian, said Thursday, emphasizing that the Spanish government is "firmly engaged" in cooperating closely with the Kingdom in this area.

Spain is satisfied with Morocco's economic achievements, especially at the institutional level, he added at a forum on Spanish-Moroccan business affairs, held Thursday in Madrid by the Spanish Confederation of Business Organizations (CEOE) and the General Confederation of the Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM).

The value of Spanish exports towards Morocco stood at 3.45 billion Euros in 2010, up 11.8% from the previous year, according to Sebastian.

He said that Morocco, which is his country’s major economic partner in Africa, is also Spain’s second client worldwide, with imports reaching 2.44 billion Euros in 2010, up 14.5% compared to 2009.

Morocco, which has recently launched reforms in the economic, justice and education fields, was able to resist the effects of the economic and financial global crisis, Sebastian said.

Reference Partner

Morocco is a reference partner for Spain, said Spanish Foreign Minister Trinidad Jimenez, stressing her country's support for the Kingdom to foster its presence at the regional and international scenes.

"By saying that Morocco is a reference partner for the Spanish economy, we are simply doing justice to our shared geography and history," Trinidad said before the New Economy Forum.

The interest of Spain is to see a stable and prosperous Morocco, she went on, since Morocco's stability and prosperity is closely linked to that of Spain.

This is normal between two neighbouring countries "such as Morocco and Spain which share a strategic position between Europe and Africa and in the Mediterranean, Jimenez underlined during the forum attended by Moroccan Economy Minister Salaheddine Mezouar and Minister Delegate in charge of Economic and General Affairs Nizar Baraka.

In this regard, she hailed the large-scale political reform announced in Morocco which Spain commends and fully supports. (MAP)
