Korea International Co-operation Agency grants Tunisia $ 600,000 donation
Global Arab Network - Korea's International Co-operation Agency (KOICA) granted Tunisia a donation worth 600,000 US dollars to finance a research project on regeneration of cork oak forests in Tunisia.

This research project, under the heading "Analysing Reasons behind Deterioration of Cork Oak Forests and Involvement of Local Population in Sustainable Development" and covering the period 2007-2011, focuses on financing the research-development aspect on cork oak which was carried out by the National Institute for Research in Agricultural Engineering, Water and Forests, during the period between May 2007 and May 2011. The agreement pertaining to this project was signed in 2007.

Tunisian and South-Korean researchers, who are planning to hold a meeting on May 9-10, 2011 in Tunis, are to discuss opportunities that would regenerate Tunisian cork plantation and focus more particularly on reasons for the deterioration of cork oak by analysing satellite images and examining physiological aspects.

The Aïn Snoussi forest in Aïn Draham, Governorate of Jendouba, was selected for research and on-the-ground experimentation.

Support transition in Tunisia
Participants in the 13th Annual Forum of "L'Economiste Maghrébin" magazine discussed, on Thursday, the new approach to relations between Tunisia and the European Union (EU) aimed to reinforce EU support to the social and economic development programme in Tunisia.

They expressed the EU's readiness to make available the adequate means to help Tunisia succeed this transitional stage.

Mr. Jean Paul Betbeze, expert in European affairs, called EU to make the most all financial back-up mechanisms made available to such European countries going through critical stages like Ireland and Greece, to support and help Tunisia succeed its transition.

A Director of Human Development at the African Development Bank (AfDB) called on the Tunisian authorities to lend further interest to the social aspect as part of its programmes.

The official also urged to make the most of the Latin American and Asian countries, reasserting the Bank's readiness to back up Tunisia.

Closing works of the forum, Industry and Technology Minister Abdelaziz Rassaa said that Tunisia is now facing great challenges, mainly employment, regional development, security, investment, export and technological development.

He specified that the Caretaker Government devised a programme consisting in implementing cyclical assistance measures and creating about 20,000 additional jobs by the end of the current year.

Other projects would be achieved to develop industrial infrastructure, including notably the creation of 85 industrial zones, 50 of which would be set up in the regional development zones, he added.

The programme also includes the achievement of industrial parks and techno-parks in Medenine, Kasserine, Kef, Gafsa, Gabes, Béja and Sidi Bouzid by 2016, by means of investments worth 281 million dinars.
