Global Arab Network - Electricity Ministry is working on a plan to increase energy production by 20 percent by 2020.

If everything works in line with the plan, Egypt will be generating an additional 12 percent of energy from the wind and eight percent from the water and sun, Electricity Minister Hassan Younis told a ceremony held in Cairo on Tuesday 14/6/2011 to mark the Italian-Egyptian Science Day.

Younis made it clear that the private sector will contribute to projects hoped to meet Egypt's growing needs of energy.

Energy generated from renewable sources in Egypt represents 10.1 percent, Younis noted.

A solar power generation station provides 140 megawatts of electricity, the minister said, adding that tests will be conducted to examine another solar station in mid July.

Promoting renewable energy

The Supreme Council of Energy approved decisions to promote the use of renewable energy.

Minister of Electricity and Energy Hassan Younis said the council approved granting lands to investors in accordance with the usufruct system in exchange for a fraction of the energy produced annually by the project.

The council also exempted components and spare parts of renewable energy stations from customs and sales tax, the minister added.

The ministries of electricity, finance, petroleum and environment will also form a joint committee to mull the creation of a fund to support the renewable energy projects in Egypt, Younis said.
