Global Arab Network - The Omani voters will head to ballot boxes today in a historic event which sees the citizens selecting the candidates of their choice to represent them at Majlis Ash’shura Seventh Term (2011-2014).

In the run-up to the much awaited event, the Ministry of Interior has completed all preparations for receiving the voters in 105 election centres fully equipped to conduct the election in the wilayats of the Sultanate, with the respective election organising committees supervising the process. The wilayats have 6-10 ballot boxes each specially designed to facilitate the voting process. As many as 518,000 voters across the Sultanate will be electing 84 members for the 7th term. The 1,133 candidates standing to contest the elections include 77 women.

All conditions are suitable for the Election Day to proceed with the process which started in a limited way earlier as Omani voters in GCC states cast their ballots at the Sultanate’s embassies in the member states, to which is added the ballots of members of the electoral committees who voted earlier as they will be busy overseeing the election process today.

The election timings were also determined in all the centres across the Sultanate which will start receiving voters from 7 am till 7 pm. This period might be extended, if necessary. The main committee for the election explained the voting process to be followed in the election centres, stressing that each voter has to present his/her identity card to be able to participate in the polls.

The preliminary results will be announced after the end of the sorting out process in every wilayat. Then, an official statement will be issued tomorrow announcing the final list of winners. The main committee said in a statement that mobile units will be provided for installing the e-system and determining the election centre of the voter who is registered in the election record across all the election centres today.

The committee also allowed the nominees to publish their propaganda and ads in accordance with the controls and procedures that allowed the nominees to define themselves to the voters, in addition to holding meetings with the voters.

The committee also allowed the transfer of the election record of the voters from one wilaya to another. A mobile electronic unit formed of concerned employees from Interior Ministry and Royal Oman Police that works on recording the ID card in the election record. This operation will continue even at the day of election tomorrow to face any emergency as this operation is applied for the first time in the Sultanate's elections in order to avoid any fraud.

Yesterday, the Minister of Interior, Sayyid Hamoud bin Faisal al Busaidy, went on an inspection visit of the voting centres in some wilayats in the Dakhilyah region, including in the Wilayat of Samayil. The minister was accompanied by members of the Main Election Committee and the Media Committee. — ONA
