World Bank: AI Could Accelerate Developing Nations’ Growth by a Century
Developing nations have a historic opportunity to bypass traditional industrial development timelines, potentially achieving a century’s worth of economic progress within just ten years by leveraging artificial intelligence. This transformation, however, is contingent upon successfully addressing persistent structural deficits in energy, digital connectivity, and human capital.
While AI is often discussed in the context of advanced economies, its application presents a unique catalyst for emerging markets. By automating labor-intensive tasks and enhancing efficiency in sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, and education, AI could provide the productivity boost necessary to elevate standards of living at an unprecedented pace. The shift represents a potential leapfrog moment for nations that have historically struggled to integrate into the global high-tech value chain.
To capture these gains, significant investment in foundational infrastructure is required. The ability to harness AI at scale is inherently linked to reliable electricity access. Without stable power grids, the computational demands of AI and the physical infrastructure required to support data centers remain out of reach for many developing states. Currently, large swaths of the global population remain offline or suffer from intermittent connectivity, creating a “digital divide” that risks further isolating these nations if not addressed immediately.
Beyond physical infrastructure, human capital development stands as a critical pillar for success. The rapid integration of AI requires a workforce equipped with advanced digital skills. Governments are being urged to prioritize educational reforms that emphasize technical literacy and computational thinking. Strengthening the digital skills of the domestic workforce is essential to ensure that the adoption of AI generates local economic value rather than simply increasing dependence on foreign technology imports.
International policy discussions are increasingly focused on how this technology can serve as an equalizer. If emerging economies can overcome the dual hurdles of infrastructure poverty and skills shortages, they may be able to compress historical development trajectories. This would mark a significant departure from the linear growth patterns observed in the 20th century, offering a faster, technology-driven pathway toward economic prosperity and greater integration into the global economy.
